EtherCAT is known to many as the Ethernet Fieldbus – an easy to use, extremely fast and reliable, safe and secure automation network. This has been realized with the EtherCAT Direct Mode operation – which is incompatible to typical IT networks using network switches.

Nevertheless, EtherCAT can also be used with controllers that control remote EtherCAT segments via existing IT networks: Using the EtherCAT Open Mode (EOM). EOM comes with many benefits in regards to flexibility, reliability and cost, but implies some limitations in regards to real-time performance and cyber-security.
